As the final grains of sand drop through the glass of 2014, we have the very welcome task to present our 5th annual compilation of our favourite bits from the year's podcasts.

Everything from the World Cup to hare-brained concepts such as football without referees are discussed here by pod regulars Jan Bilton, Terry Duffelen and Graham Sibley (and a couple of other people who pop in).

Compiled and edited by your presenter - the returning Chris Oakley - you can listen to The Best of The Sound of Football 2014 for FREE by clicking here. Alternatively, right-click the link to save it to whatever device you wish.

Sound Of Football Podcast 207 - 2014 Advent Calendar

Like the Queen's Speech and Brussels Sprouts, the Sound of Football Advent Calendar has become part of the tradition of Christmas. Jan's roasting some chestnuts on an open fire, Graham's hanging the stockings while Terry is decking the hall for some reason.

As ever, 24 doors await to be opened. Who will be behind them this year?

And what's that behind the satsumas? Why it's an extra treat of some Top Trumps.

Merry Christmas from everyone at the Sound of Football Podcast.

Sound Of Football Podcast 206 - FA Cup 3rd Round Draw

After a delightful evening at the FSF Awards last week, the team return to the bread and butter of podcasting again.

This week, Graham, Terry and Jan pore over the freshly drawn third round fixture list and pick out our highlights of the first weekend of the new year.

Also, stars collide in what proves to the most momentous round of Sound of Football Top Trumps to date - don't dare miss it.

Sound Of Football Podcast 205 - The trouble with FIFA

FIFA's in a terrible state - according to western media. Corrupt, greedy and unable to keep their own house in order. That must make them unfit for purpose, right? Jan, Graham and Terry discuss the fallout from the as yet unpublished Garcia investgation and Judge Eckert's subsequent assessment of it. This week's pod is shorter on answers than it is on questions but then that's FIFA for you.

There's also some Top Trumps.

Don't forget to get behind our nomination in the FSF Awards - you have until midday Monday 24 November (UK time) to get your vote in.

Sound Of Football Podcast 204 - Vote for us!

This week's podcast starts in celebratory mood as Terry, Jan and Graham take a moment to glow with pride at being short-listed for the prestigious Football Supporters' Federation's Best Podcast/Radio show 2014.

The award itself will be based on a straight vote and we're up against some extremely big hitters so winning the thing is very unlikely for a small independent venture like ours. However any votes for us are greatly appreciated - you can do it here: fsf.org.uk/awards.

We're not resting on our laurels though and we get on with this week's discussion which is all about this weekend's Euro qualifiers.

Sound Of Football Podcast 203 - Weakened Teams

Brendan Rodgers seems to be an easy target at the moment but maybe he brings it on himself. This week he decided to start with a slightly less world class XI away to a rampant Real Madrid. This week Graham, Terry and Jan discuss the wisdom of weakened selections and how fair it is on fans, the competition, the broadcasters and those all important sponsors.

There's also the rarity that is Jan's selection for this round of Top Trumps. Can he strike back after weeks of the "Terry Tyranny".

Sound Of Football Podcast 202 - 3rd down and inches

In this episode Terry tells us all about his weekend's Wembley experience watching the Detroit Loins @ Atlanta Falcons. Graham And Jan are on hand to discuss what NFL expansionism means for the Premier League who themselves are looking to tap those lucrative foreign markets.

High drama in this week's Top Trumps. Is the pressure of on-going success starting to affect Terry? Find out in this week's exciting instalment.

Sound Of Football Podcast 201 - Right hammerings

It's never fun when your team is on the wrong end of a pasting - especially when your mates keep constantly reminding you of it. The wounds of the weekend's 8(EIGHT) - 0 drubbing at the hands of Southampton are still painfully fresh to Sunderland supporter Jan, so what better time is there to discuss cricket score defeats. Graham and Terry are on hand to help him through this troubling period.

There's also a round of Top Trumps to cheer him up. Though considering how he's fared recently, that may not be such a good thing.

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Sound Of Football Podcast 200 - Double century celebrations

Graham, Jan and the fully fit again Terry get together to celebrate a milestone number for the podcast. We take the opportunity to look ahead to imagine the world when we hit 300 episodes (hopefully somehwere around 2017).

As a bonus, in a special segment of this extended episode, original SoF host Chris Oakley returns with some of his memories of the early days of the pod. Of course, there's some Top Trumps at the end too.

Sound Of Football Podcast 199 - Euro 2016 qualifiers

The team are reunited again to discuss the upcoming Euro qualifers, taking listeners through the extended weekend of available viewing.

We say reunited but Terry is still in quarantine with #thepox - but like the trooper he is, the show goes on with him broadcasting LIVE from his plastic bubble.

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Wednesday, 1 October 2014

Sound Of Football Podcast 198 - The pressure of local derbies

After a weekend where almost every other game in Europe seemed to be a hard fought local derby, Graham and Jan take time to ponder if these must win games are actually any good. Graham describes his experience at Sunday's Derby della Lanterna in Genoa and Jan offers to fight another northerner live on a future podcast.

Terry is unwell.

Sound Of Football Podcast 197 - Man United are good again

Have you heard? Man United aren't rubbish any more, and all it took was a few hundred million quid. Graham, Terry and Jan look at the prospects for the Gaalacticos (you can thank Twitter for that one). We also decide whether Scotland should stay or go by using soccer dice. Not giving away any spoilers but if you're Scottish you might want to do a big shop at Tesco's before Thursday.

If that's not enough, there's more Top Trumps too - with you the listeners in control. Mario Gomez carries your hopes in this round.

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Sound Of Football Podcast 196 - Blatter's video game

Sepp Blatter is about to be re-elected again and as part of his election campaign he's announced that a video referral system could be in trailed next year. We hate the idea of video refs and we've made our views on the matter abundantly clear. That's not going to stop us ranting about it for another half an hour.

We then ease our rage with another exciting round of Top Trumps.

Sound Of Football Podcast 195 - Too much, too young

As we watch the last knockings of this summer's Transfer Window, Graham, Terry and Jan look at the questionable wisdom of young talent joining big clubs. We discuss Wilf Zaha who recently returned on loan to Crystal Palace before the conversation inevitably turns towards Scott Sinclair.

And of course, more Top Trumps.

Sound Of Football Podcast 194 - 50 Years of Match of the Day

Having had our own celebration last week, Graham, Terry and back from his hols Jan take a look at 50 years of Match of the Day - the BBC's Saturday night highlights package. Of course we get side-tracked on the way by such things as Doctor Who, Soccer Saturday and people who take photos with their iPads.

If all that wasn't enough, there's some Top Trumps too.

This week's podcast is dedicated to the memory of James Alexander Gordon, who died this week aged 78.

With the final weekend of the World Cup upon us, Graham, Jan and the returning Terry look forward to the final and yes, even the 3rd/4th place play off.

Of course, we look back at the semi-finals and discuss the history-making drubbing the hosts recieved at the hands of Germany. We also take the rare opportunity to big ourselves up following some lovely words about us in the Telegraph

Sound Of Football Podcast 190 - World Cup 2014 Report Day 21

All the quarter final places are now filled and in the two day break we look back at a breath-taking second round and try (and fail) to contain our eagerness for the weekend ahead.

With Terry sunning himself in Sicily, it's just Graham and Jan with this week's World Cup update. The withdrawal of football for 62 hours may have taken it's toll on them however as at one point they jump into a time machine and visit an alternate timeline where England somehow got to the quarter finals.

As the group stages draw to a close Terry, Jan and Graham give their considered view over what's been happening during The Best World Cup Ever ™

There's been so much amazing stuff over the past two weeks we don't even have time to talk about the rubbish stuff like England or the bitey man.

Recorded in the hour before England's opener against Italy, we look at what's happened to Spain, the Netherlands and the hosts Brazil. We also preview the England game but you'll already know how that turns out.

It was also World Gin Day, a fact that becomes more than apparent the longer you listen.

Sound Of Football Podcast 187 - World Cup 2014 Preview

On the eve of the World Cup we present our exhaustive preview of all the action to come from the weeks ahead. Join Jan, Terry and Graham as they sift through the wallchart picking out the key fixtures and most importantly who's going to come out on top. We choose our finalists and it's all played out for your enjoyment through the medium of soccer dice.

We try to contain our excitement but this close to the tournament, it starts to get to dangerous levels.

Sound Of Football Podcast 186 - World Cup memories

The Sound of Football Podcast's World Cup coverage kicks off with our own personal reflections of tournaments past. Join Graham and Terry as they stretch their memories back as far as 1978 while Jan struggles to remember anything he did in the whole of 1994.

The tournament is just a few days away now, if you're not excited by the prospect maybe you will be after you've listened to this.

And as if this week's podcast isn't long enough, there's more Sound of Football Top Trumps, with you the listeners still in control of the game.

Sound Of Football Podcast 185 - Goodbye 2013/14, it's been great

It's that end of season feeling, all the prizes have been handed out and now all that's left is to lie back in the sun and reflect on what's passed. Until we get completely consumed be the impending World Cup that is.

Graham, Jan and Terry look back on a most agreeable season for our respective teams in a manner that's even less measured than usual - including a rather ill-conceived comparison of Tom Huddleston with Ferenc Puskas.

There's also another round of Sound of Football Top Trumps with you the listeners in control of the game - will Mario Gomez's goals see you through another round?

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Sound Of Football Podcast 184 - The Joy Of B-Sides

Seems like everyone's in a tizzy about the new proposals regarding B teams and League 3. Well they're not really proposals are they, they're just ideas for discussion, so of course you can trust the Sound Of Football team to have a rummage and pick the sweetcorn out them.

On this week's pod we'll tell you exactly why it's a non-starter and as an added bonus you get to hear Jan be told the good news about Sunderland officially staying up live on the podcast.

The fun and larks don't end there of course, as there's another round of Top Trumps to be played. Will it ever end?

This week's Sound Of Football podacst comes from outside the Westfalenstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund where Graham, Terry and guest panellist Jon Hartley reflect upon the German football fan experience by comparison to the English. We ask what we'd take home and what we'd leave behind.

Sound Of Football Podcast 180 - The League of Nations

Regular listeners to the podcast will we know we never shy away from a coming up with hare-brined scheme or seven but the subject of this week's discussion has trumped all of them. UEFA's new plans for a Nations' League including promotion, relegation and mini-tournament has us very excited. Join Jan, Terry and Graham as they chew over the ramifactions of this new age of international football in Europe.

There's also more Top Trumps with Terry looking to consolodate his position back in the game after coming back from the brink last time out.

Sound Of Football Podcast 179 - No referees

Sometimes we like a bit of blue sky thinking on this pod and this week we've pushed the boat out. Football without referees. How on earth could it ever work? Is it a utopian dream or a dystopian nightmare? Find out in the next half hour*. Feel free to get in touch with us through the usual channels after you've taken it all in.

*Includes references to Milton Friedman, Alan Moore and Stanley Kubrick.

Plus, it's a roll-over on Top Trumps and Terry's down to his last card. Can he get himself back in the game or will it become a two horse race between Jan and you, the listeners.

Sound Of Football Podcast 178 - Poor role models

There's a mildly melancholy tone this week as Jan recounts his weekend visit to Wembley and Graham And Terry face the prospect of global Armageddon. There's also room to discuss Alan Pardew's Fighting Rum™ and our disdain for cheap jibes just to hawk poor autobiographies.

In happier news, there's a thrilling round of Top Trumps too. No, we really mean it this time!

Sound Of Football Podcast 177 - Euro 2016 draw reaction

Yes, just a few weeks after the excitement of the World Cup Finals draw, last Sunday saw the balls coming out the pots for the qualification round of Euro 2016.

This expanded tournament has now has 24 teams in the final stage, making qualification seemingly a formality. Join Graham, Terry and Jan as they pick the bones of this draw and see where any excitement hides. Jan's in a particularly excitable mood as he's off to Wembley on Sunday.

There's another round of Top Trumps too - maybe that will calm Jan's excitement or it could make him completely unbearable.

Sound Of Football Podcast 176 - The Champions League returns

The Champions League returns with the round of 16 and all eyes are on the Etihad for Man City v Barcelona. Well, not all yes - Terry's interest will be focused on Leverkeusen v PSG (so he tells us).

Plus there's more Top Trumps, with Jan moving ever closer to the win - will there be any twists left in the season?

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Sound Of Football Podcast 175 - Distractions

Are we getting too much information about football? Are the very things intended to hold our interest in the game distracting us from the game itself. With 24 hour sports news, in-game betting, statistical minutiae, Flappy Bird and independently-produced podcasts, it's no wonder it's hard to concentrate on the game.

Also, Top Trumps returns with you, the listeners, pinning your hopes of another victory on Daniele De Rossi.

Sound Of Football Podcast 174 - 3G Pitches

Last week, the Football Conference, the top two tiers of non-league football in England, voted against a proposal to allow matches to be played on artificial turf despite the fact that surfaces are allowed in the Champions League and World Cup qualification.

Join Graham, Terry and Jan as they discuss the issues involved with these new 3G pitches.

Sound Of Football Podcast 173 - Chicanery!

Subterfuge, duplicity, deceit, villainy or just downright cheating. Will it be the ruin of the game? Why do we accept some forms chicanery as part of the game but treat other forms with righteous indignation. All this and more are explored on this week's Podcast with Graham Sibley, Terry Duffelen and our ever hot under the collar northerner Jan Bilton.

Thanks for all your Soccanory suggestions: they'll all be posted here shortly before we select our first book to cover.

Sound Of Football Podcast 172 - Ballon bores

Without a single current Premier League player in the FIFA World XI 2013 what better time for us to do a mid-season review for the English top flight in which we thumb our noses at the so-called experts and say how great 2013-14 has been so far for the much-maligned financial behemoth.

Jan and Terry join a slightly distracted Graham to discuss what they wouldn't be surprised seeing in the remainder of this season of surprises.

And talking of surprises, Sound of Football Top Trumps is a must listen to this week. We'll say no more.

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Sound Of Football Podcast 171 - Tirade Slamming Outbursts

Happy New Year to all our listeners! The new year starts, as always, with the opening of the transfer window and the 3rd Round of the Cup. If that wasn't enough for hacks to get their teeth into, there seems to be even more hoopla and shenanigans that have nothing to do with kicking a ball that appear to be far more interesting to write about. Paul Lambert, Adam Lallana, Theo Walcott - it's all here for you.

Also this week, we introduce you to what we hope will be a new regular feature for the podcast - Soccanory - a kind of book club that we want you to get involved with, so get your suggestions for good football reads to us.

Meanwhile, in Sound of Football Top Trumps, it's getting perilously close to squeaky bum time for you, the listeners, and Terry as Jan's dominance shows no sign of wavering.

You can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.
