European Football Special podcast - Episode 2

The monthly European football superpod is back! The panel returns to Studio 31 to bring you the trials and tribulations of football on the continent, and this month there’s a distinctly international feel as we focus on Euro 2012 Qualifying before having a quick look at domestic football in our countries of choice: Spain, France, Russia, Germany and Italy. There’s also a detailed look at Serbian hooliganism in the wake of the disturbing scenes in Genoa this week.

Featuring Graham Sibley, Jonathan Fadugba, Chris Oakley, James Appell, Terry Duffelen and Chris Nee, EFS will be available to Sound Of Football listeners as well as subscribers to the wonderful Twofootedtackle podcast.

Sound Of Football Podcast 58 - Liverpool's seventh inning stretch and other Baseball cliches

Join us for another edition of the Sound Of Football podcast. This week we don our reflective hats and try to make sense of the crisis at Liverpool FC.

We discuss the thinking behind Tom Hicks and George Gillett's tactics in dragging the new ownership bid through the courts. We wonder if, in John W Henry, Liverpool will be getting a new owner who will use the same methods as their would be predecessors to bring success to the club. We lament the plight of Roy Hodgson, a coach we all admire and ask the rather obvious question, is the Liverpool manager on borrowed time?

We also consider the nuclear option: What will happen if the court finds in favour of Hicks and Gillett? We also manage to include at least five quotes from The Simpsons which must be a pod record.

Sound Of Football Podcast 57 - Hard Tackles

On this week's Sound Of Football podcast the chaps examine the recent attention surrounding hard tackling in English football. In the light of Nigel De Jong's leg breaker on Hatem Ben Arfa and Karl Henry's flying kick on Jordi Gomez we ask if the Premier League is becoming more physical?

Are some Premier League manager's using excessively physical tactics because they are under the impression that it will increase their chances of surviving in the League? If so is there an alternative? Or are we just over-reacting to a perception of a series of disparate incidents rather than identifying a trend?

We return to our regular Monday evening/Tuesday morning slot with a discussion on the prospects of English clubs in the Champions League and Europa League.

Sound Of Football Podcast 55 - Official: Match Of The Day is rubbish

This week, the Sound Of Football podcast revisit a previous podcast on the football media in light of the recent criticism of Match Of The Day.

Chris, Graham and Terry jump on the MOTD bashing bandwagon (which we, in our own self-important way, think we helped start). The chaps look at ways in which we think this most venerable of football highlights programme could be changed. The conversation also looks at football TV show formats in general and what sort of shows we'd like to see.

Needless to say it's not long before the words "Richardson" and "James" are mentioned.

We'd love to know what you think. Are we being too harsh on Messrs Lineker and co? What sort of football TV show would you like to see?

Sound Of Football Podcast 53 - Football Media Special

This week, Chris, Graham and Terry try to make sense of the UK media's coverage of football in general and the England team in particular.

They look at the recent demonising of Fabio Capello in The Sun and find comparisons with the treatment of passed England managers.

Then their ire is focused on TV and radio coverage with some novel suggestions on how to improve Match Of The Day, not all of which are entirely legal.

Our World Cup predictions: Read 'em and weep...

It was our great and rather pleasant surprise to hear that Jon Price, the brains behind Australian football blog Stattoz, has turned our recent attempt at predicting the outcome of the World Cup into graphical form.

As a result, if you visit www.stattoz.com.au, you'll be able to see a chart showing our guesses from the Second Round onwards which, if nothing else, will stand as evidence by which we'll be humiliated for years to come.

Our thanks to Jon for listening into the podcast and for taking the time to transcribe our predictions!

Meanwhile, on a rival podcast...

What connects The Sound of Football, dubiously-flavoured crisps, Sarah Cracknell and Kelly Dalglish? Answer: The TwoFootedTackle podcast!

Yes, once again The Sound of Football's Terry, Graham and Chris were invited along to join Gary Andrews and Chris Nee for a chinwag and a jolly old time discussing football.

As ever, we had a fabulous time being a little bit silly and ever-so-slightly immature as a great deal of hilarity ensued over the course of an hour or so. To hear the end result of the five of us chatting about the beautiful game like a bunch of 8-year-olds, visit the TwoFootedTackle website where you can download the MP3 in question or for the complete TFT experience, follow the guys on Twitter at @twofootedtackle or visit their Facebook fanpage.

Our thanks to Chris and Gary for inviting us to take part in their latest podcast.

Sound Of Football Podcast 39 - Champions League Final 2010

Chris and Graham present The Sound of Football's first ever '3-Way Special' for the 2010 Champions League Final.

In an innovative and possibly ill-judged move, we recorded a show before, during and after a big game - namely the battle between Inter and Bayern at the Bernabeu Stadium.

We assessed the key players, the coaches, the tactics - in fact the whole shooting match - before checking out some of the more amusing Twitter messages floating around on the web during the final, prior to reviewing the action after the event from Madrid.

Interview: Sir Geoff Hurst

To paraphrase Carlsberg's advertising campaign, we don't do interviews, but when we do, we generally pick only the finest people available.

And so it was that earlier this week we had the great good fortune to interview one of the legends of English football - Sir Geoff Hurst.

As Honorary West Ham Supporter for The Sound of Football, it seemed only fitting that Chris was sent along to talk about Sir Geoff's long and illustrious career as well as England's chances of winning the World Cup in 2010.

The interview took place at Porter Novelli in London to promote a new World Cup commemorative medal being launched by the Royal Mint. You can get your own medal for free by visiting the Royal Mint website, so hurry along and pick up your own lucky charm while stocks last!

Finally, before we let you hear the interview, we'd just like to say a huge thank you to our old friend at TwoFootedTackle, Chris Nee for inviting us along to meet Sir Geoff himself. We're truly very grateful.

So now on with the interview which you can listen to the podcast here or if you right click on that link, you can download the MP3.

Enjoy...

There is also a fond farewell to Soccerjens.

There's also the answer to last week's competition where you could have won a gold car. What do you mean, you didn't enter?

Sound Of Football Podcast 31 - David Beckham and Phil Brown

Welcome aboard for another Sound Of Football podcast. This week, Chris, Terry and Graham cast their cynical eyes over the circus that is David Beckham's ankle. We ask what impact the former England captain's absence in the England squad will have on their chances in the World Cup. More pertinently we look at the economic effect in the wake of the great man's injury to himself, his brand, the FA and the media.

Then we have a good laugh about Phil Brown.

Sound Of Football Podcast 30 - Technology in Football

This week, the chaps discuss an old bugbear for the three of us. In light of FIFA's recent decision to not pursue the use of goal line technology, Chris, Graham and Terry talked about the problems and concerns they have about the use of technology in the game.

There are some forthright opinions which go against the general Sky Sports led consensus that technology is a good thing. They also question the motives of commercial broadcasters in the officiating of football.

We very much welcome your views and ask you to contribute to the debate. Listen to the podcast and let us know what you think.

Extra Terry and Graham!

Just a quick heads-up to inform you that 'our Graham' (thanks Cilla) can be heard on this week's TwoFootedTackle podcast with those exceedingly nice people, Gary Andrews and Chris Nee.

Furthermore, if we'd been even remotely efficient, we'd have told you about 'our Terry' (thanks Mr. Bewes) appearing on the same podcast three weeks ago. For that we're most humbly sorry, but Terry's appearance on the TFT podcast is still available to hear if you take a trip along to the same website.

Enjoy, as they say, and be prepared for us to collect the proverbial match ball when Chris Oakley appears on the TwoFootedTackle in a few weeks time. Don't say you haven't been warned...
